Over the period under review, exports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum at X cubic meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, exports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates plummeted to $X in 2021. In general, exports faced a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 183% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Namibia (X cubic meters) and South Africa (X cubic meters) represented roughly 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X cubic meters), mixing up an 11% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Namibia (with a CAGR of +65.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates supplier in SADC, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 27% share of total exports.

In South Africa, exports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates decreased by an average annual rate of -16.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Namibia (+52.3% per year) and Swaziland (-16.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per cubic meter, with a decrease of -24.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed measured growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 73%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per cubic meter), while Swaziland ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, overseas purchases of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates increased by 48% to X cubic meters, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, imports of wood residues, pellets and other agglomerates reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 102% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates agglomerates structure, recording X cubic meters, which was approx. 90% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X cubic meters), making up a 7.2% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+16.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +16.9% from 2012-2021. Botswana (+4.1 p.p.) and South Africa (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) and Botswana ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021.

In terms of the main importing countries, Botswana, with a CAGR of +18.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to less than $X per cubic meter, dropping by -41.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 47%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per cubic meter in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per cubic meter), while South Africa totaled less than $X per cubic meter.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+1.1%).
