Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Lesotho (X tons), making up a 5.5% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wool grease exports from South Africa stood at +15.4%. At the same time, Lesotho (+25.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +25.0% from 2012-2022. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Tanzania (+4.1 p.p.) and Lesotho (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -4.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest wool grease supplier in SADC, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with an 8% share of total exports.
In South Africa, wool grease exports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+0.1% per year) and Lesotho (+11.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -36.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 57%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of wool grease and fatty substances imported in SADC dropped sharply to X tons, falling by -25.1% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 64%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wool grease imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 71% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 17% share of total imports. Namibia (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Swaziland (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wool grease imports into South Africa stood at -4.5%. At the same time, Mozambique (+33.0%), Zambia (+3.0%), Swaziland (+2.4%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +33.0% from 2012-2022. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Namibia (-12.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.1 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.1 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-4.1 p.p.) and Namibia (-4.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 4.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -4.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+3.2% per year) and Tanzania (-1.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -5.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 36%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+24.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
