In value terms, worked flat glass exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, faced a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), making up a 6.1% share of total exports. Zambia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -15.2% from 2012 to 2021. Tanzania (-3.2%) and Zambia (-14.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa and Tanzania increased by +16 and +4.6 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest worked flat glass supplier in SADC, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -13.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+1.6% per year) and Zambia (+3.1% per year).

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+21.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of worked flat glass were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports saw tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 129% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, worked flat glass imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 93%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Tanzania (X tons) represented the largest importer of worked flat glass, comprising 45% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Angola (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons). All these countries together held near 44% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +20.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Among the main importing countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +25.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -21.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
