In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of x-ray apparatus, when their volume decreased by -76.1% to X units. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 1,061% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, x-ray apparatus exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The biggest shipments were from South Africa (X units), together reaching 98% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the x-ray apparatus exports, with a CAGR of +19.7% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +9.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest x-ray apparatus supplier in SADC.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 291% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, faced a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -17.3% per year.

For the third consecutive year, SADC recorded growth in supplies from abroad of x-ray apparatus, which increased by 35% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 121%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, x-ray apparatus imports amounted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) represented the largest importer of x-ray apparatus, generating 67% of total imports. Botswana (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Mozambique (6.2%). Zambia (X units), Tanzania (X units), Namibia (X units) and Angola (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+31.9%), Mozambique (+27.1%), Namibia (+20.0%), Zambia (+14.0%) and Tanzania (+11.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +31.9% from 2012-2022. Angola experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Botswana (+11 p.p.), Mozambique (+5.8 p.p.), Zambia (+2.6 p.p.), Namibia (+2.6 p.p.) and Tanzania (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -10.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported x-ray apparatus in SADC, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with an 11% share.

In South Africa, x-ray apparatus imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+17.7% per year) and Angola (+2.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -23.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 277%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+10.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
