The total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, shipments abroad of x-ray generators decreased by -7.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 93% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, x-ray generator exports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), generating a 5.7% share of total exports.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of x-ray generators. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest x-ray generator supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 1.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +4.3%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -9% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Namibia stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.3%).

In 2021, overseas purchases of x-ray generators increased by 20% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, x-ray generator imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild decrease. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the main importer of x-ray generators, generating 44% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X tons), Angola (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Namibia (X tons), together achieving a 40% share of total imports. The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) - each amounted to a 6.6% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+24.9%), Tanzania (+16.5%), Namibia (+8.4%) and Mozambique (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +24.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-2.6%) and Angola (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Botswana (+14 p.p.), Tanzania (+6.7 p.p.), Namibia (+3.7 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola and South Africa saw its share reduced by -5.3% and -15.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported x-ray generators in SADC, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 7.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 6.7% share.

In South Africa, x-ray generator imports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-5.3% per year) and Tanzania (+10.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+7.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
