The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 1,750%. Over the period under review, the (cocoyam) exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, yautia (cocoyam) exports fell notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 2,051% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the (cocoyam) exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, South Africa (X kg) represented the main exporter of yautia in SADC, committing 100% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the yautia exports, with a CAGR of -10.5% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest yautia (cocoyam) supplier in SADC.

In 2022, imports of yautia in SADC amounted to X tons, growing by 1.6% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 741% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of (cocoyam) imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, yautia (cocoyam) imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 933% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of (cocoyam) imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Botswana was the major importer of yautia in SADC, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 75% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X kg), constituting a 20% share of total imports. Mozambique (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Botswana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the yautia imports, with a CAGR of +6.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Namibia (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Mozambique (-20.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Botswana and Namibia increased by +28 and +4.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Botswana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported yautia in SADC, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 22% share of total imports.

In Botswana, yautia (cocoyam) imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+1.8% per year) and Mozambique (-21.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -19.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 72%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (-1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
