Yoghurt Market Size in SADC
The SADC yoghurt market fell to $X in 2022, which is down by -8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a pronounced shrinkage. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Yoghurt Production in SADC
In value terms, yoghurt production fell slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a perceptible setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, overseas shipments of yoghurt were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 15%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, yoghurt exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2022. Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+53.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +53.2% from 2012-2022. While the share of Zimbabwe (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-3.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest yoghurt supplier in SADC, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 3.9% share of total exports.
In South Africa, yoghurt exports shrank by an average annual rate of -2.5% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -7.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while South Africa amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-1.1%).
Yoghurt Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, supplies from abroad of yoghurt decreased by -4.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 26%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, yoghurt imports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Botswana represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 43% of total imports. Mozambique (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Swaziland (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Lesotho (X tons). All these countries together held near 48% share of total imports. Malawi (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to yoghurt imports into Botswana stood at +7.8%. At the same time, Malawi (+14.3%), Mozambique (+13.0%), Lesotho (+5.6%), Namibia (+3.9%) and Swaziland (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-13.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Botswana (+20 p.p.), Mozambique (+7.4 p.p.), Lesotho (+2.8 p.p.), Namibia (+2.4 p.p.) and Malawi (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola saw its share reduced by -33.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Botswana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported yoghurt in SADC, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 14% share.
In Botswana, yoghurt imports increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+11.3% per year) and Angola (-14.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -12.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
