The Saudi bottled water market shrank slightly to $X in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a perceptible descent. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Bottled Water Production in Saudi Arabia
In value terms, bottled water production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
Bottled Water Exports
Exports from Saudi Arabia
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of bottled waters, when their volume decreased by -37.5% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 299% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, bottled water exports fell notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 188% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then fell rapidly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Jordan (X tons) was the main destination for bottled water exports from Saudi Arabia, with a 84% share of total exports. Moreover, bottled water exports to Jordan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Africa (X tons), with a 3.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Jordan totaled +71.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+9.3% per year) and South Africa (+65.3% per year).
In value terms, Jordan ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for bottled waters exports from Saudi Arabia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 7.8% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 3.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Jordan amounted to +79.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (+44.7% per year) and the UK (+8.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average bottled water export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 63%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+17.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Bottled Water Imports
Imports into Saudi Arabia
In 2022, bottled water imports into Saudi Arabia fell to X tons, which is down by -9% against 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, bottled water imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +14.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of bottled water to Saudi Arabia, with a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, bottled water imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), twofold. Bahrain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy amounted to +37.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+2.9% per year) and Bahrain (0.0% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X), France ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the largest bottled water suppliers to Saudi Arabia, together accounting for 76% of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Italy, with a CAGR of +30.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average bottled water import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Fiji ($X per ton), while the price for Lebanon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kuwait (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
