Chick Peas Market Size in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi chick peas market declined slightly to $X in 2022, falling by -3.5% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, the total consumption indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +3.7% against 2020 indices. Exports from Saudi Arabia

In 2022, exports of chick peas from Saudi Arabia rose modestly to X tons, with an increase of 2.2% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chick peas exports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 90%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Kuwait (X tons) was the main destination for chick peas exports from Saudi Arabia, accounting for a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, chick peas exports to Kuwait exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), threefold. Bahrain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Kuwait stood at +15.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (-1.5% per year) and Bahrain (+7.3% per year).

In value terms, Kuwait ($X), Bahrain ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for chick peas exported from Saudi Arabia worldwide, together accounting for 89% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Bahrain, with a CAGR of +35.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of chick peas was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chick peas imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +7.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 35%. Imports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the United Arab Emirates (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of chick peas to Saudi Arabia, accounting for a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, chick peas imports from the United Arab Emirates exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), twofold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from the United Arab Emirates totaled +6.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+6.5% per year) and India (+0.6% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chick peas to Saudi Arabia, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from the United Arab Emirates amounted to +7.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+2.4% per year) and Russia (+5.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average chick peas import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average import price increased by 33%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
