Exports from Saudi Arabia

In 2022, the amount of grapefruits exported from Saudi Arabia surged to X tons, jumping by 26% on the previous year. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 284%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grapefruit exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 184% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Brunei Darussalam (X tons) was the main destination for grapefruit exports from Saudi Arabia, accounting for a 93% share of total exports. Moreover, grapefruit exports to Brunei Darussalam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ireland (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Brunei Darussalam amounted to +54.9%.

In value terms, Brunei Darussalam ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for grapefruits exports from Saudi Arabia, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ireland ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Brunei Darussalam amounted to +51.4%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average grapefruit export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -15.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 89%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Brunei Darussalam amounted to $X per ton.

Imports into Saudi Arabia

In 2022, imports of grapefruits into Saudi Arabia dropped to X tons, reducing by -3.7% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 141%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, grapefruit imports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 500% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of grapefruit to Saudi Arabia, accounting for a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, grapefruit imports from Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Africa (X tons), fourfold. Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Egypt amounted to +6.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+7.2% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (+31.5% per year).

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constituted the largest supplier of grapefruits to Saudi Arabia, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 4.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Syrian Arab Republic, with a 1.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Egypt amounted to +32.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (+10.5% per year) and Syrian Arab Republic (+28.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average grapefruit import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 456% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw significant growth. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Syrian Arab Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
