Canned Meat Market Size in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi canned meat market expanded slightly to $X in 2021, picking up by 3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Vietnam (X tons) was the main destination for canned meat exports from Saudi Arabia, accounting for a 30% share of total exports. Moreover, canned meat exports to Vietnam exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kuwait (X tons), twofold. Malaysia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Vietnam totaled +49.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kuwait (+21.2% per year) and Malaysia (+84.8% per year).

In value terms, Kuwait ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Vietnam ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for canned meat exported from Saudi Arabia worldwide, with a combined 66% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Jordan, Malaysia, Iraq, Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which together accounted for a further 32%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +386.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average canned meat export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 9.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bahrain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Sri Lanka (+28.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X tons of canned meat were imported into Saudi Arabia; picking up by 34% against 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 56%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, canned meat imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 66%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Malaysia (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Kuwait (X tons) were the main suppliers of canned meat imports to Saudi Arabia, together accounting for 82% of total imports.
