Passenger Car Market Size in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi passenger car market rose significantly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, showed a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of passenger cars were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a significant contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 452% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, passenger car exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a dramatic shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 141% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The UK (X units), Italy (X units) and Sudan (X units) were the main destinations of passenger car exports from Saudi Arabia.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the United Arab Emirates (with a CAGR of +65.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the UK ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for passenger cars exports from Saudi Arabia, comprising 1,749% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 672% share of total exports. It was followed by Sudan, with a 522% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK amounted to +55.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+72.3% per year) and Sudan (+1.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average passenger car export price amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -11.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 95% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Libya (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Saudi Arabia

In 2021, the amount of passenger cars imported into Saudi Arabia reached X units, growing by 3.5% compared with the year before. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, passenger car imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The United States (X units), Japan (X units) and China (X units) were the main suppliers of passenger car imports to Saudi Arabia, with a combined 68% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +31.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X), China ($X) and the United States ($X) appeared to be the largest passenger car suppliers to Saudi Arabia, together accounting for 57% of total imports.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per unit), while the price for Australia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
