Plastic Container Market Size in Saudi Arabia

In 2021, the Saudi plastic container market increased by 8% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption showed a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 100%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic container exports declined notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 114% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Sudan (X tons) and Bahrain (X tons) were the main destinations of plastic container exports from Saudi Arabia, together comprising 59% of total exports. These countries were followed by Ethiopia, Oman, Yemen, Somalia, Germany, Kuwait, Jordan and Egypt, which together accounted for a further 35%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Germany (with a CAGR of +47.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for plastic container exported from Saudi Arabia were the United Arab Emirates ($X), Sudan ($X) and Ethiopia ($X), with a combined 61% share of total exports. Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, Germany, Somalia, Kuwait, Jordan and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Germany, with a CAGR of +36.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average plastic container export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -3% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a mild decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 24%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Jordan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Yemen (+1.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of plastic containers decreased by -64.6% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, imports showed a sharp slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic container imports reduced notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports faced a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest plastic container supplier to Saudi Arabia, accounting for a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic container imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), twofold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.
