Exports from Saudi Arabia

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of plums and sloes, when their volume decreased by -21.5% to X tons. In general, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 359%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plum and sloe exports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 412%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ireland (X tons) was the main destination for plum and sloe exports from Saudi Arabia, accounting for a 81% share of total exports. Moreover, plum and sloe exports to Ireland exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Brunei Darussalam (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Germany (X tons), with a 5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Ireland totaled +45.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brunei Darussalam (+44.7% per year) and Germany (+65.2% per year).

In value terms, Ireland ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for plums and sloes exports from Saudi Arabia, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brunei Darussalam ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 4.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Ireland totaled +34.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brunei Darussalam (+46.3% per year) and Germany (+9.9% per year).

In 2022, the average plum and sloe export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ireland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Kuwait (+20.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Saudi Arabia

Plum and sloe imports into Saudi Arabia dropped remarkably to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -20.7% against the year before. In general, total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +35.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plum and sloe imports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +44.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 89%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Egypt (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) were the main suppliers of plum and sloe imports to Saudi Arabia, with a combined 68% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Egypt (with a CAGR of +38.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the largest plum and sloe suppliers to Saudi Arabia, together comprising 64% of total imports.
