In 2022, overseas shipments of canned vegetables increased by 41% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 125% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, canned vegetable exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 194% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Jordan (X tons) was the main destination for canned vegetable exports from Saudi Arabia, with a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, canned vegetable exports to Jordan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Bahrain (X tons), fourfold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Jordan totaled +18.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bahrain (+58.1% per year) and Germany (+73.6% per year).
In value terms, Jordan ($X) remains the key foreign market for canned vegetables exports from Saudi Arabia, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bahrain ($X), with a 9.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Jordan totaled +26.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bahrain (+41.8% per year) and Germany (+80.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average canned vegetable export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2021, overseas purchases of canned vegetables decreased by -22.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, canned vegetable imports reduced notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of canned vegetable imports to Saudi Arabia, together accounting for 62% of total imports. China, the United States, Thailand, Jordan, Egypt, Greece and Morocco lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Jordan (with a CAGR of +22.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest canned vegetable suppliers to Saudi Arabia were Spain ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and the United States ($X), with a combined 54% share of total imports. China, Italy, Greece, Jordan, Thailand, Egypt and Morocco lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.
Jordan, with a CAGR of +24.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average canned vegetable import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 6.3% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 15%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Greece ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
