In 2021, overseas shipments of acetic anhydride decreased by -95.2% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after six years of growth. Overall, exports showed a abrupt setback. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, acetic anhydride exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. Norway was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 63% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Sweden (X tons) and Denmark (X tons), together creating a 35% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to acetic anhydride exports from Norway stood at -16.7%. At the same time, Denmark (+40.7%) and Sweden (+33.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +40.7% from 2012-2021. While the share of Sweden (+18 p.p.) and Denmark (+17 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Norway (-29.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Norway ($X) remains the largest acetic anhydride supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sweden ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Norway amounted to -11.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sweden (+40.1% per year) and Denmark (+43.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 69% against the previous year. Export price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, acetic anhydride export price increased by +115.3% against 2016 indices. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

For the fifth consecutive year, Scandinavia recorded decline in overseas purchases of acetic anhydride, which decreased by -9.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports saw a abrupt slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 50%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, acetic anhydride imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Norway was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 65% of total imports. Sweden (X tons) took a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Finland (7.9%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to acetic anhydride imports into Norway stood at +4.0%. At the same time, Finland (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. In 2021, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 55% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
