For the third consecutive year, Scandinavia recorded decline in shipments abroad of aluminium foil, which decreased by -8.1% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 4.6%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, aluminium foil exports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 9.4%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Sweden represented the key exporter of aluminium foil in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 47% of total exports in 2021. Finland (X tons) held a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Norway (20%) and Denmark (8.6%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Finland (with a CAGR of +3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest aluminium foil supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 17% share.

In Sweden, aluminium foil exports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Finland (+0.6% per year) and Denmark (-2.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -5.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 14%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Scandinavia

In 2021, approx. X tons of aluminium foil were imported in Scandinavia; growing by 3.2% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Denmark (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) represented the major importers of aluminium foil in Scandinavia, together generating 73% of total imports. Finland (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Iceland (X tons) and Norway (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 27% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Iceland (with a CAGR of +7.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Denmark ($X), Sweden ($X) and Finland ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 81% of total imports.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +2.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Iceland ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
