Asparagus Market Size in Scandinavia

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Scandinavia asparagus market, when its value decreased by -13% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Asparagus Production in Scandinavia

In value terms, asparagus production shrank slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 1,632% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

The country with the largest volume of asparagus production was Sweden (X tons), comprising approx. 93% of total volume. Moreover, asparagus production in Sweden exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Finland (X tons), more than tenfold.

In Sweden, asparagus production expanded at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2012-2022.

The average asparagus yield shrank to X tons per ha in 2022, declining by -7.1% against the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 100% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the asparagus yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of asparagus in Scandinavia expanded slightly to X ha, rising by 2.6% on the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 924%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to asparagus production attained the maximum at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Scandinavia

In 2022, the amount of asparagus exported in Scandinavia surged to X tons, rising by 29% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports showed a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 217% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, asparagus exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 290% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Sweden represented the key exporter of asparagus in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 75% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Finland (X tons), achieving a 22% share of total exports. Norway (X kg) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of asparagus. At the same time, Finland (+31.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +31.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Norway (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest asparagus supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($X), with a 29% share of total exports.

In Sweden, asparagus exports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Finland (+33.8% per year) and Norway (+0.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 15% against the previous year. Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, asparagus export price increased by +5.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 68% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of asparagus decreased by -13.7% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asparagus imports dropped to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 18%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Sweden was the key importer of asparagus in Scandinavia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 51% of total imports in 2022. Norway (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Finland (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 49% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Finland (with a CAGR of +6.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Sweden ($X), Norway ($X) and Finland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year.
