Exports in Scandinavia
In 2022, shipments abroad of bananas increased by 8.9% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 67% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, banana exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 56%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Sweden was the main exporter of bananas in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Finland (X tons), making up a 15% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to banana exports from Sweden stood at -3.9%. At the same time, Finland (+36.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +36.3% from 2012-2022. While the share of Finland (+14 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Sweden (-14.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest banana supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.
In Sweden, banana exports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.4% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 15%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Finland stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (-0.5%).
Banana Imports
Imports in Scandinavia
Banana imports fell modestly to X tons in 2022, dropping by -4.1% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, banana imports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 6.5% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Sweden (X tons) was the key importer of bananas, making up 53% of total imports. Finland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 25% share, followed by Norway (22%).
Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of bananas. At the same time, Finland (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +2.0% from 2012-2022. Norway experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Finland (+2.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Sweden saw its share reduced by -2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Sweden ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bananas in Scandinavia, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($X), with a 24% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Sweden amounted to -1.2%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Finland (-1.0% per year) and Norway (-2.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 4.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (-1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
