Barley Market Size in Scandinavia

The Scandinavia barley market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Barley Production in Scandinavia

In value terms, barley production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a pronounced descent. The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Sweden (X tons), Finland (X tons) and Norway (X tons).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Norway (with a CAGR of +0.8%), while production for the other leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.

The average barley yield expanded rapidly to X tons per ha in 2022, rising by 14% on 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the barley yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In value terms, barley exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Sweden (X tons) was the largest exporter of barley in Scandinavia, achieving 98% of total export.

Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the barley exports, with a CAGR of -7.7% from 2012 to 2022. Sweden (+14 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) also remains the largest barley supplier in Scandinavia.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, barley export price increased by +69.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Sweden.

Barley Imports

Imports in Scandinavia

In 2022, barley imports in Scandinavia soared to X tons, surging by 154% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 264%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, barley imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a slight increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 342% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Sweden (X tons) and Finland (X tons) dominates imports structure, together comprising 92% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Norway (X tons), comprising an 8.4% share of total imports.

Finland, with a CAGR of +27.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, barley import price increased by +54.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
