Basic Dye Market Size in Scandinavia

In 2021, the Scandinavia basic dye market increased by 1.3% to $X, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Overall, exports, however, saw perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, basic dye exports declined significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 115%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Finland represented the largest exporter of basic dyes and preparations based thereon in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 75% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Sweden (X tons), constituting a 22% share of total exports. Denmark (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Finland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the basic dyes and preparations based thereon exports, with a CAGR of +12.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Sweden (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Denmark (-27.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Finland and Sweden increased by +43 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Finland ($X) remains the largest basic dye supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sweden ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Finland totaled +14.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sweden (+2.7% per year) and Denmark (-26.0% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

After four years of growth, overseas purchases of basic dyes and preparations based thereon decreased by -23.1% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, basic dye imports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Sweden (X tons) represented the major importer of basic dyes and preparations based thereon, committing 55% of total imports. Finland (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Denmark (X tons). All these countries together held near 44% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +6.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported basic dyes and preparations based thereon in Scandinavia, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($X), with a 23% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Sweden totaled +8.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Finland (-4.9% per year) and Denmark (+0.3% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 10% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
