The Scandinavia carbonate market dropped dramatically to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -24.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a perceptible shrinkage. Over the period under review, exports showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 59%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, carbonate exports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 17%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Sweden was the largest exporter of carbonates and peroxocarbonates in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 56% of total exports in 2021. Norway (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Finland (X tons) and Denmark (X tons). All these countries together took near 44% share of total exports.

Exports from Sweden decreased at an average annual rate of -13.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Denmark (+10.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +10.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Norway (-11.4%) and Finland (-18.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Denmark and Norway increased by +7.4 and +3.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest carbonate supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Norway ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 16% share.

In Sweden, carbonate exports shrank by an average annual rate of -13.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Norway (+0.3% per year) and Denmark (+10.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -16.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, carbonate export price decreased by -39.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 53%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of carbonates and peroxocarbonates increased by 7.2% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep slump. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Sweden (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Norway (X tons) and Finland (X tons) was the key importer of carbonates and peroxocarbonates in Scandinavia, constituting 99% of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +5.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Denmark ($X), Finland ($X) and Sweden ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 81% share of total imports.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +4.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 82%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
