The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, caustic soda exports rose to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -21.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 37%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Norway (X tons) was the main exporter of caustic soda, comprising 82% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Finland (X tons), constituting a 14% share of total exports. Sweden (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to caustic soda exports from Norway stood at +2.7%. At the same time, Finland (+19.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +19.0% from 2012-2021. Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Finland increased by +9.7 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Norway ($X) remains the largest caustic soda supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sweden ($X), with a 7.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Norway amounted to +3.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sweden (-2.1% per year) and Finland (+4.8% per year).

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in overseas purchases of caustic soda, when their volume increased by 3.5% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, caustic soda imports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a tangible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 61%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Finland (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together comprising 92% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Denmark (X tons), creating a 6.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +4.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Finland ($X), Sweden ($X) and Denmark ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 98% of total imports.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +3.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -8.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, caustic soda import price decreased by -28.7% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
