In value terms, chestnut exports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 154%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Denmark (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) was the largest exporter of chestnuts in Scandinavia, generating 100% of total export.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, chestnut export price increased by +35.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 101% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Denmark totaled $X per ton.

In 2021, purchases abroad of chestnuts increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports saw a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chestnut imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports posted a prominent increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Sweden represented the major importer of chestnuts in Scandinavia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 60% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Denmark (X tons), Norway (X tons) and Finland (X tons), together generating a 40% share of total imports.

Imports into Sweden increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Finland (+12.7%), Denmark (+2.8%) and Norway (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +12.7% from 2012-2021. Finland (+4.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Sweden saw its share reduced by -3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chestnuts in Scandinavia, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Denmark ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Norway, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Sweden totaled +7.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Denmark (+2.0% per year) and Norway (+8.3% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 31% against the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 54% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Finland ($X per ton) and Norway ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) and Sweden ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
