Chlorides Market Size in Scandinavia

The Scandinavia chlorides market stood at $X in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride), when their volume increased by 12% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chlorides exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Finland represented the main exporter of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 58% of total exports in 2021. Sweden (X tons) took a 35% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Norway (6.4%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +2.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 13%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chlorides imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 23%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Sweden (X tons) was the main importer of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride), creating 52% of total imports. Norway (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 25% share, followed by Denmark (16%) and Finland (6.8%).

Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride). At the same time, Finland (+9.8%) and Norway (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +9.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Denmark (-4.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Norway ($X per ton) and Finland ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) and Denmark ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
