Exports in Scandinavia

In 2022, shipments abroad of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Sweden (X tons) was the key exporter of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, constituting 70% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Norway (X tons), committing a 27% share of total exports. Finland (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Sweden decreased at an average annual rate of -15.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Finland (+33.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +33.5% from 2012-2022. Norway experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Norway (+20 p.p.) and Finland (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Sweden (-22.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Norway ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

In Sweden, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres declined by an average annual rate of -13.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Norway (-9.1% per year) and Finland (+17.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -39.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+2.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Scandinavia

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -0.3% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 33%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Norway (X tons) was the major importer of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, committing 82% of total imports. Sweden (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Finland (6.3%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre imports into Norway stood at -3.1%. At the same time, Finland (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +1.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Sweden (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Norway and Finland increased by +2.4 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Norway ($X), Sweden ($X) and Finland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022.

In terms of the main importing countries, Sweden, with a CAGR of +7.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -26.4% against the previous year. Import price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres increased by +5.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 45%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
