Coffee Extract Market Size in Scandinavia

In 2021, the Scandinavia coffee extract market decreased by -14.3% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. The total consumption indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -16.3% against 2019 indices. In 2021, shipments abroad of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates increased by 34% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coffee extract exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Sweden represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 66% of total exports. Denmark (X tons) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Finland (9.4%). Norway (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Sweden increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Finland (+16.2%) and Denmark (+6.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +16.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Norway (-1.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Finland (+5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Norway and Sweden saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -3.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sweden ($X), Denmark ($X) and Finland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 97% of total exports.

Finland, with a CAGR of +28.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+10.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Coffee extract imports amounted to X tons in 2021, surging by 7.4% on 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 13%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, coffee extract imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 7.8%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Sweden (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) represented the main importers of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates in 2021, recording approx. 43% and 33% of total imports, respectively. Norway (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Finland (7.6%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Sweden (with a CAGR of +5.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest coffee extract importing markets in Scandinavia were Sweden ($X), Denmark ($X) and Norway ($X), with a combined 93% share of total imports.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +0.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In 2021, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 9.4%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Denmark ($X per ton) and Norway ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) and Sweden ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (-2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
