After two years of decline, the Scandinavia composite paperboard market increased by 8.3% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, composite paperboard exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Finland was the main exporter of composite paper and paperboard in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 60% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Sweden (X tons), achieving a 40% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Finland (with a CAGR of -2.5%).

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Finland stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+1.2%).

Imports in Scandinavia

In 2021, supplies from abroad of composite paper and paperboard decreased by -7.2% to X tons, falling for the fifth year in a row after five years of growth. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -32.6% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, composite paperboard imports reached $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Sweden (X tons), distantly followed by Norway (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Finland (X tons) represented the main importers of composite paper and paperboard, together comprising 100% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Norway (with a CAGR of +6.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported composite paper and paperboard in Scandinavia, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Norway ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Denmark, with a 21% share.
