Couscous Market Size in Scandinavia

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in the Scandinavia couscous market, when its value increased by 8.1% to $X. The total consumption indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, couscous exports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Sweden (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) dominates exports structure, together committing 96% of total exports. Norway (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Norway (with a CAGR of +50.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest couscous supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Denmark ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.

In Sweden, couscous exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Denmark (-4.1% per year) and Norway (+23.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, couscous export price increased by +67.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Scandinavia

Couscous imports contracted modestly to X tons in 2021, shrinking by -3.2% compared with 2020 figures. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +12.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 17%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, couscous imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Sweden (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) represented the major importers of couscous in Scandinavia, together finishing at near 78% of total imports. Norway (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Finland (6.7%). Iceland (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Denmark (with a CAGR of +19.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest couscous importing markets in Scandinavia were Denmark ($X), Sweden ($X) and Norway ($X), with a combined 92% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Denmark, with a CAGR of +31.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 11% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 21%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Iceland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+10.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
