Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Denmark (X tons), Finland (X tons) and Norway (X tons), together accounting for 95% of total production.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Norway (with a CAGR of +0.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.

In 2021, the average yield of currants and gooseberries in Scandinavia soared to X tons per ha, growing by 23% against the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 56%. Over the period under review, the currant and gooseberry yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, approx. X ha of currants and gooseberries were harvested in Scandinavia; reducing by -12.4% compared with the year before. Overall, the harvested area continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to currant and gooseberry production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Scandinavia

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of currants and gooseberries decreased by -29.2% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 448%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry exports shrank to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 280% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.

Denmark dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 98% of total exports in 2021. Sweden (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to currant and gooseberry exports from Denmark stood at -3.5%. At the same time, Sweden (+44.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sweden emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +44.4% from 2012-2021. Sweden (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Denmark saw its share reduced by -1.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Denmark ($X) remains the largest currant and gooseberry supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sweden ($X), with a 1.9% share of total exports.

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 20% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, currant and gooseberry export price increased by +100.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the export price increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Denmark stood at $X per ton.

Imports in Scandinavia

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of currants and gooseberries increased by 119% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded strong growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, currant and gooseberry imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Denmark was the main importer of currants and gooseberries in Scandinavia, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 66% of total imports in 2021. Norway (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Sweden (11%) and Finland (10%). Iceland (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to currant and gooseberry imports into Denmark stood at +14.2%. At the same time, Finland (+20.0%) and Iceland (+15.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +20.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Sweden (-1.7%) and Norway (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Denmark (+27 p.p.) and Finland (+6.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Sweden and Norway saw its share reduced by -13.8% and -20.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Norway ($X), Denmark ($X) and Sweden ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 87% of total imports. These countries were followed by Finland and Iceland, which together accounted for a further 13%.

Among the main importing countries, Finland, with a CAGR of +7.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -39.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 56% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
