Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, direct dye exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw slight growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 57%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Sweden prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 94% of total exports in 2021. Finland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the direct dyes and preparations based thereon exports, with a CAGR of +29.3% from 2012 to 2021. Finland (-30.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Sweden (+87 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Finland (-81 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest direct dye supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($X), with a 4.3% share of total exports.

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 6.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a tangible expansion. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -24.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, direct dye imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -25.2% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 59%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Sweden was the key importer of direct dyes and preparations based thereon in Scandinavia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 71% of total imports in 2021. Finland (X tons) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Norway (8.3%). Denmark (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Sweden increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Norway (+25.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Norway emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +25.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Denmark (-1.4%) and Finland (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Norway and Sweden increased by +6.9 and +6.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Sweden ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported direct dyes and preparations based thereon in Scandinavia, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Norway, with an 8.9% share.
