In 2022, shipments abroad of dry vegetables decreased by -40.4% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 104%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.
In value terms, dry vegetable exports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Sweden dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2022. Norway (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dry vegetables exports, with a CAGR of +6.2% from 2012 to 2022. Norway (-9.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Sweden (+20 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Norway saw its share reduced by -10.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest dry vegetable supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Norway ($X), with a 3.2% share of total exports.
In Sweden, dry vegetable exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 54% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Norway amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+0.7%).

Imports in Scandinavia
For the third consecutive year, Scandinavia recorded decline in supplies from abroad of dry vegetables, which decreased by -6.3% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, dry vegetable imports amounted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 14%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Sweden (X tons) was the main importer of dry vegetables, making up 70% of total imports. Norway (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Finland (9.3%).
Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the dry vegetables imports, with a CAGR of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022. Norway and Finland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Sweden (+4.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Norway (-2.3 p.p.) and Finland (-2.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Sweden ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dry vegetables in Scandinavia, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Norway ($X), with a 29% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Sweden amounted to +3.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Norway (+1.2% per year) and Finland (+1.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 7.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
