Durum Wheat Market Size in Scandinavia

In 2022, the Scandinavia durum wheat market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a mild decline. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Durum Wheat Production in Scandinavia

In value terms, durum wheat production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 137%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of durum wheat production was Sweden (X tons), comprising approx. 76% of total volume. Moreover, durum wheat production in Sweden exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Finland (X tons), fivefold.

In Sweden, durum wheat production expanded at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Finland (-2.5% per year) and Norway (+0.7% per year).

The average durum wheat yield totaled X tons per ha in 2022, increasing by 5.8% against 2021. In general, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 75%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the durum wheat yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The durum wheat harvested area shrank modestly to X ha in 2022, waning by -2.6% on the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the durum wheat harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Durum Wheat Exports

Exports in Scandinavia

In 2022, the amount of durum wheat exported in Scandinavia contracted remarkably to X tons, waning by -29.1% on 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 809%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, durum wheat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 344% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Sweden prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Finland (X tons), constituting a 5.2% share of total exports. Norway (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the durum wheat exports, with a CAGR of +43.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Finland (+15.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Norway (-28.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Sweden (+89 p.p.) and Finland (+3.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Norway saw its share reduced by -92.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest durum wheat supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

In Sweden, durum wheat exports increased at an average annual rate of +44.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Finland (+6.3% per year) and Norway (-23.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 91% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 120%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Durum Wheat Imports

Imports in Scandinavia

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of durum wheat, when their volume decreased by -27.6% to X tons. In general, imports showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 212%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, durum wheat imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 183% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Sweden was the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 55% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Finland (X tons) and Norway (X tons), together constituting a 45% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Norway (with a CAGR of -2.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported durum wheat in Scandinavia, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Norway ($X), with a 21% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Sweden totaled -3.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Norway (+1.0% per year) and Finland (-7.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 22% against the previous year. Import price indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, durum wheat import price increased by +83.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
