Exports in Scandinavia

After three years of growth, overseas shipments of eggplants (aubergines) decreased by -58.9% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 262%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, eggplant exports reduced markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 258% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

Sweden represented the major exporter of eggplants (aubergines) in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Finland (X tons), comprising a 13% share of total exports.

Exports from Sweden increased at an average annual rate of +14.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Finland (+28.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +28.0% from 2012-2022. Finland (+8.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Sweden saw its share reduced by -8.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest eggplant supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 86% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Sweden stood at +12.5%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 53% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while Sweden totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (-1.4%).

Imports in Scandinavia

In 2022, purchases abroad of eggplants (aubergines) decreased by -6.8% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +25.1% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, eggplant imports shrank to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Sweden (X tons) was the major importer of eggplants (aubergines), constituting 66% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Norway (X tons) and Finland (X tons), together creating a 34% share of total imports.

Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the eggplants (aubergines) imports, with a CAGR of +4.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Norway (+4.8%) and Finland (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Sweden increased by +1.9 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sweden ($X), Norway ($X) and Finland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 99.9% of total imports.

Norway, with a CAGR of +4.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (-0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
