The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, expanded clays exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +96.2% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 71%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2021, Denmark (X tons) was the key exporter of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag, making up 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Norway (X tons) and Finland (X tons), together creating a 22% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to expanded clays exports from Denmark stood at +1.9%. At the same time, Finland (+83.4%) and Norway (+23.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +83.4% from 2012-2021. While the share of Norway (+12 p.p.) and Finland (+7.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Denmark (-17.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Denmark ($X) remains the largest expanded clays supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Norway ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Denmark amounted to +1.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Norway (+16.0% per year) and Finland (+30.9% per year).

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, expanded clays imports in Scandinavia soared to X tons, growing by 20% on 2020. Overall, imports saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, expanded clays imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +92.0% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 32%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

Sweden was the main importer of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag in Scandinavia, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 80% of total imports in 2021. Norway (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Denmark (6.7%). Finland (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag imports, with a CAGR of +38.7% from 2012 to 2021. Norway experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Denmark (-2.4%) and Finland (-23.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Sweden (+70 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Denmark, Norway and Finland saw its share reduced by -12.9%, -13.6% and -43.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag in Scandinavia, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Denmark ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Norway, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Sweden stood at +13.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Denmark (+2.2% per year) and Norway (+0.4% per year).
