In 2021, shipments abroad of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken increased by 5.8% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +30.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 37%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut exports dropped to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

Sweden represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 89% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Denmark (X tons), constituting an 11% share of total exports.

Exports from Sweden increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Denmark (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Denmark emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +9.2% from 2012-2021. Sweden, with a CAGR of +16.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -14.7% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, fresh chicken cut export price decreased by -27.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Sweden amounted to $X per ton.

In 2021, fresh chicken cut imports in Scandinavia skyrocketed to X tons, with an increase of 17% compared with 2020. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Denmark (X tons) was the largest importer of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken, committing 68% of total imports. Sweden (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Finland (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 32% share of total imports.

Imports into Denmark increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Finland (+19.9%) and Sweden (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +19.9% from 2012-2021. Finland (+4.3 p.p.) and Sweden (+4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Denmark saw its share reduced by -7.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest fresh chicken cut importing markets in Scandinavia were Denmark ($X), Sweden ($X) and Finland ($X), with a combined 100% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Finland, with a CAGR of +18.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 22%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
