Hot-Rolled Free-Cutting Steel Market Size in Scandinavia

In 2021, the Scandinavia hot-rolled free-cutting steel market increased by 50% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of hot-rolled bars in free-cutting steels was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, hot-rolled free-cutting steel exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded buoyant growth. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Finland prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. Denmark (X tons) and Norway (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Finland increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Norway (+48.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Norway emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +48.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Denmark (-11.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Finland (+45 p.p.) and Norway (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Denmark saw its share reduced by -8.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Finland ($X) remains the largest hot-rolled free-cutting steel supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Denmark ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.

In Finland, hot-rolled free-cutting steel exports increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Denmark (+5.2% per year) and Norway (+38.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -27.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 110% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+18.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, overseas purchases of hot-rolled bars in free-cutting steels were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a dramatic decline. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hot-rolled free-cutting steel imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a deep setback. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the one major importers of hot-rolled bars in free-cutting steels, namely Sweden, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the hot-rolled bars in free-cutting steels imports, with a CAGR of -18.9% from 2012 to 2021. Sweden (+29 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported hot-rolled bars in free-cutting steels in Scandinavia.

In Sweden, hot-rolled free-cutting steel imports contracted by an average annual rate of -15.3% over the period from 2012-2021.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 61% against the previous year. Import price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Sweden.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Sweden amounted to +4.5% per year.
