Exports in Scandinavia

In 2022, exports of iron or steel plaited bands and slings in Scandinavia soared to X tons, with an increase of 49% on the year before. Overall, exports continue to indicate moderate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 93% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, steel plaited band exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 77% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Sweden was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Norway (X tons), achieving a 31% share of total exports. Finland (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the iron or steel plaited bands and slings exports, with a CAGR of +27.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Finland (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Norway (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Sweden increased by +58 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Norway ($X), Sweden ($X) and Finland ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.

Sweden, with a CAGR of +16.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -9.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

After three years of decline, overseas purchases of iron or steel plaited bands and slings increased by 26% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, steel plaited band imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Norway was the major importer of iron or steel plaited bands and slings in Scandinavia, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 75% of total imports in 2022. Sweden (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Finland (12%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to steel plaited band imports into Norway stood at -5.7%. At the same time, Finland (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +9.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Sweden (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Finland (+9.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Sweden (-2.4 p.p.) and Norway (-6.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Norway ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported iron or steel plaited bands and slings in Scandinavia, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($X), with a 17% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Norway stood at -5.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Finland (+7.9% per year) and Sweden (-11.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -8.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
