Lard Market Size in Scandinavia
After two years of decline, the Scandinavia lard market increased by less than 0.1% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption showed a noticeable contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -15.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 136%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

For the third year in a row, Scandinavia recorded growth in shipments abroad of lard, which increased by 8.3% to X tons in 2022. Total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +89.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, lard exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 63%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Sweden (X tons), together recording 99.9% of total export.
Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lard exports, with a CAGR of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Sweden ($X) also remains the largest lard supplier in Scandinavia.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Sweden amounted to +5.9%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 24% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 48%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Sweden.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Sweden amounted to +3.3% per year.
Lard Imports
Imports in Scandinavia
For the third consecutive year, Scandinavia recorded growth in overseas purchases of lard, which increased by 338% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a sharp decline. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, lard imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a dramatic curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 332%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Sweden dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 94% of total imports in 2022. Finland (X tons) and Norway (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lard imports into Sweden stood at -33.7%. At the same time, Finland (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +4.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Norway (-21.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Finland and Norway increased by +4 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Sweden ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lard in Scandinavia, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Norway ($X), with a 7.2% share of total imports.
In Sweden, lard imports decreased by an average annual rate of -29.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Norway (-9.1% per year) and Finland (+12.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -51.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 93%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (+15.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
