Exports in Scandinavia

For the fourth consecutive year, Scandinavia recorded growth in shipments abroad of lithium cells ans batteries, which increased by 1.8% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, lithium battery exports reached $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +40.1% against 2014 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Denmark (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) were the key exporters of lithium cells ans batteries in 2021, resulting at approx. 39% and 34% of total exports, respectively. Norway (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Finland (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 26% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Sweden (with a CAGR of +16.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Denmark ($X), Sweden ($X) and Norway ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 94% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Denmark, with a CAGR of +26.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 9.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 22%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+21.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, the amount of lithium cells ans batteries imported in Scandinavia expanded modestly to X tons, picking up by 2.7% against 2020. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +3.1% against 2013 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, lithium battery imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +81.9% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 101%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Sweden (X tons) was the major importer of lithium cells ans batteries, generating 41% of total imports. Norway (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 26% share, followed by Denmark (24%) and Finland (7.6%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Norway (with a CAGR of +16.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest lithium battery importing markets in Scandinavia were Norway ($X), Denmark ($X) and Sweden ($X), together accounting for 92% of total imports.

Norway, with a CAGR of +8.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
