Sweden represented the major exporter of molasses in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Finland (X tons), committing a 10% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to molasse exports from Sweden stood at +28.4%. At the same time, Finland (+31.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +31.9% from 2012-2022. Finland (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Sweden saw its share reduced by -2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest molasse supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, molasse imports reached $X in 2022. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +74.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Norway was the largest importer of molasses in Scandinavia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 59% of total imports in 2022. Finland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 30% share, followed by Sweden (11%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Finland (with a CAGR of +0.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, Norway ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported molasses in Scandinavia, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Finland ($X), with a 26% share of total imports.
