Memories Market Size in Scandinavia

In 2021, the Scandinavia memories market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, showed a deep reduction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 63%. For the third consecutive year, Scandinavia recorded growth in overseas shipments of multichip integrated circuits: memories, which increased by 17% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, memories exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Finland was the largest exporting country with an export of around X units, which recorded 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Sweden (X units), achieving a 33% share of total exports. Norway (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Finland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the multichip integrated circuits: memories exports, with a CAGR of -3.2% from 2012 to 2021. Norway (-17.7%) and Sweden (-27.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Finland (+53 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Sweden (-53.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest memories supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

In Sweden, memories exports plunged by an average annual rate of -8.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Finland (+4.5% per year) and Norway (-16.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 84% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 113%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per unit), while Finland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+26.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of multichip integrated circuits: memories increased by 44% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Sweden (X units) was the major importer of multichip integrated circuits: memories, mixing up 56% of total imports. Finland (X units) took a 33% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Norway (10%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Norway (with a CAGR of +2.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest memories importing markets in Scandinavia were Finland ($X), Sweden ($X) and Norway ($X).

Finland, with a CAGR of +9.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per unit, rising by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per unit), while Sweden ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
