In 2021, the Scandinavia non-medical x-ray market decreased by -28.3% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, consumption showed a deep reduction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of non-medical x-rays, when their volume increased by 59% to X tons. In general, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 163% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +24.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Finland was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 84% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Denmark (X tons), making up an 11% share of total exports. Sweden (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Finland was also the fastest-growing in terms of the non-medical x-rays exports, with a CAGR of +28.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Denmark (+16.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Sweden (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Finland (+39 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Denmark (-3.4 p.p.) and Sweden (-32.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest non-medical x-ray supplying countries in Scandinavia were Finland ($X), Denmark ($X) and Sweden ($X), with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Denmark, with a CAGR of +11.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -22.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -2.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 29%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-medical x-ray imports dropped to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 22%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2021, Sweden (X tons), distantly followed by Norway (X tons), Denmark (X tons) and Finland (X tons) were the largest importers of non-medical x-rays, together generating 98% of total imports. Iceland (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
