Oat Market Size in Scandinavia

The Scandinavia oat market surged to $X in 2022, growing by 21% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Oat Production in Scandinavia

In value terms, oat production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 137% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Finland (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and Norway (X tons), with a combined 99.9% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Norway (with a CAGR of +2.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.

The average oat yield surged to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 20% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 24%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the oat yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of oats production in Scandinavia was estimated at X ha, rising by 1.8% compared with the previous year. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 12%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of oats decreased by -19.9% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 30%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, oat exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Finland (X tons) and Sweden (X tons) was the main exporter of oats in Scandinavia, mixing up 99.9% of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +0.6%).

In value terms, Sweden ($X) and Finland ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.

Among the main exporting countries, Sweden, with a CAGR of +1.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review.

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 19% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Finland amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+1.1%).

Oat Imports

Imports in Scandinavia

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of oats increased by 165% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 247%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, oat imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Norway represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 68% of total imports. Finland (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by Sweden (7.9%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to oat imports into Norway stood at -2.0%. At the same time, Finland (+10.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +10.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Sweden (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Finland (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Sweden saw its share reduced by -16.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest oat importing markets in Scandinavia were Norway ($X), Finland ($X) and Sweden ($X).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
