From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, optical fiber cables exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 75%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. Norway represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 71% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Sweden (X tons), achieving a 25% share of total exports. Finland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Norway decreased at an average annual rate of -2.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Sweden (+3.5%) and Finland (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sweden emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +3.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Sweden (+8.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Norway (-9.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Norway ($X) emerged as the largest optical fiber cables supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sweden ($X), with a 31% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Norway totaled -1.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sweden (+3.9% per year) and Finland (+6.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of optical fiber cables increased by 5.7% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, optical fiber cables imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +59.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, leveling off in the following year.

Imports by Country

Norway was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 68% of total imports. Sweden (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Finland (13%).

Norway was also the fastest-growing in terms of the optical fiber cables imports, with a CAGR of +5.6% from 2012 to 2022. Finland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Sweden (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Norway (+17 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Finland (-4.2 p.p.) and Sweden (-12.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In Norway, optical fiber cables imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Sweden (-1.8% per year) and Finland (+2.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -5.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
