In 2021, exports of oriented strandboard (OSB) in Scandinavia declined to X cubic meters, shrinking by -11.7% on 2020. In general, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 72% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X cubic meters in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, oriented strandboard (OSB) exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 41% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Sweden prevails in exports structure, accounting for X cubic meters, which was approx. 97% of total exports in 2021. Finland (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the oriented strandboard (OSB) exports, with a CAGR of +8.1% from 2012 to 2021. Finland (-13.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Sweden (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Finland (-12.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest oriented strandboard (OSB) supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($X), with a 1.8% share of total exports.

In Sweden, oriented strandboard (OSB) exports increased at an average annual rate of +12.9% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per cubic meter, picking up by 41% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, oriented strandboard (OSB) export price increased by +63.0% against 2017 indices. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per cubic meter), while Finland amounted to $X per cubic meter.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (+4.4%).

Imports in Scandinavia

In 2021, imports of oriented strandboard (OSB) in Scandinavia expanded markedly to X cubic meters, increasing by 8.1% compared with 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +17.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 23%. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, oriented strandboard (OSB) imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a prominent increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Sweden (X cubic meters) and Norway (X cubic meters) represented the largest importers of oriented strandboard (OSB) in 2021, amounting to approx. 46% and 38% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Finland (X cubic meters), making up a 16% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Finland (with a CAGR of +18.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Sweden ($X), Norway ($X) and Finland ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
