In 2021, approx. X tons of oxides of boron and boric acids were exported in Scandinavia; increasing by 141% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 188% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, boron oxide and boric acid exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 108%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Sweden was the key exporter of oxides of boron and boric acids in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 77% of total exports in 2021. Finland (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Denmark (8.1%).

Exports from Sweden increased at an average annual rate of +19.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Finland (+33.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Finland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +33.3% from 2012-2021. Denmark experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Sweden and Finland increased by +14 and +10 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest boron oxide and boric acid supplying countries in Scandinavia were Denmark ($X), Sweden ($X) and Finland ($X), together accounting for 99% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Denmark, with a CAGR of +19.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -17.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 46%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+19.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of oxides of boron and boric acids was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, boron oxide and boric acid imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Finland represented the major importer of oxides of boron and boric acids in Scandinavia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 57% of total imports in 2021. Sweden (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 25% share, followed by Denmark (13%) and Norway (4.8%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to boron oxide and boric acid imports into Finland stood at -2.6%. At the same time, Norway (+7.4%) and Denmark (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Norway emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +7.4% from 2012-2021. Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Denmark (+4.3 p.p.), Sweden (+2.7 p.p.) and Norway (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Finland saw its share reduced by -9.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Finland ($X), Sweden ($X) and Denmark ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 92% share of total imports. Norway lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 7.6%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Norway, with a CAGR of +7.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Norway (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
