The Scandinavia pear market rose modestly to $X in 2021, picking up by 2.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a perceptible downturn. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Pear Production in Scandinavia

In value terms, pear production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 64%. The level of production peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

The country with the largest volume of pear production was Denmark (X tons), comprising approx. 74% of total volume. Moreover, pear production in Denmark exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Sweden (X tons), fourfold. Norway (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Denmark was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Sweden (+0.1% per year) and Norway (+5.3% per year).

In 2021, the average pear yield in Scandinavia reached X tons per ha, with an increase of 1.8% compared with the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 27%. The level of yield peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the total area harvested in terms of pears production in Scandinavia stood at X ha, remaining constant against 2020. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 6.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, pear exports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 59% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Denmark represented the major exporter of pears in Scandinavia, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Sweden (X tons), achieving a 10% share of total exports. Finland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to pear exports from Denmark stood at +2.1%. At the same time, Sweden (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sweden emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Scandinavia, with a CAGR of +6.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Finland (-17.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Denmark (+10 p.p.) and Sweden (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Finland saw its share reduced by -12.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Denmark ($X) remains the largest pear supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sweden ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.

In Denmark, pear exports increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sweden (+6.7% per year) and Finland (-14.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Scandinavia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 30% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while Denmark ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Scandinavia

Pear imports reduced to X tons in 2021, which is down by -3.4% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pear imports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Sweden (X tons) represented the largest importer of pears, committing 39% of total imports. Denmark (X tons) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Norway (22%) and Finland (16%). Iceland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Iceland (with a CAGR of -1.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest pear importing markets in Scandinavia were Sweden ($X), Denmark ($X) and Norway ($X), together comprising 81% of total imports. These countries were followed by Finland and Iceland, which together accounted for a further 19%.

Iceland, with a CAGR of -1.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 33%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Denmark ($X per ton) and Finland ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) and Iceland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
