In 2021, overseas shipments of preservative-treated rough wood increased by 61% to X cubic meters, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 65%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X cubic meters. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preservative-treated rough wood exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Sweden (X cubic meters) represented the major exporter of preservative-treated rough wood, creating 72% of total exports. Finland (X cubic meters) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Norway (8.4%).

Sweden was also the fastest-growing in terms of the preservative-treated rough wood exports, with a CAGR of +7.4% from 2012 to 2021. Norway experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Finland (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Sweden increased by +18 percentage points.

In value terms, Sweden ($X) remains the largest preservative-treated rough wood supplier in Scandinavia, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Finland ($X), with a 27% share of total exports.

Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X cubic meters. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preservative-treated rough wood imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Norway (X cubic meters) and Sweden (X cubic meters) represented roughly 99% of total imports in 2021.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Sweden (with a CAGR of +0.7%).

In value terms, Norway ($X) and Sweden ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021.
