Pumpkin Market Size in Scandinavia

In 2022, the Scandinavia pumpkin market decreased by -0.7% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, recorded a strong increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Pumpkin Production in Scandinavia

In value terms, pumpkin production fell significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 1,216%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Sweden (X tons) remains the largest pumpkin producing country in Scandinavia, comprising approx. 78% of total volume. Moreover, pumpkin production in Sweden exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Finland (X tons), fourfold.

In Sweden, pumpkin production expanded at an average annual rate of +21.0% over the period from 2012-2022.

In 2022, the average yield of pumpkin (squash and gourds) in Scandinavia reduced to X tons per ha, which is down by -5% on 2021 figures. The yield indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pumpkin yield increased by +45.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the pumpkin yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 263% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to pumpkin production attained the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in Scandinavia

In 2022, overseas shipments of pumpkin (squash and gourds) decreased by -46.8% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 191%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pumpkin exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 117% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Sweden (X tons) and Finland (X tons), together finishing at 99% of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Finland (with a CAGR of +48.0%).

In value terms, the largest pumpkin supplying countries in Scandinavia were Sweden ($X) and Finland ($X).

Finland, with a CAGR of +40.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Scandinavia stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while Finland totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (-0.1%).

Pumpkin Imports

Imports in Scandinavia

Pumpkin imports shrank to X tons in 2022, declining by -7.3% compared with the year before. Total imports indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, pumpkin imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 19%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Sweden was the major importer of pumpkin (squash and gourds) in Scandinavia, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 51% of total imports in 2022. Finland (X tons) took a 28% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Norway (22%).

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sweden (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
